What is Minecraft Earth?
Minecraft Earth is an augmented reality (AR) mobile game that allows you to build, explore, and collaborate with friends in the real world. You can collect resources, craft blocks, and build structures just like in the original Minecraft game, but all within the context of your own environment.
Gameplay details
Minecraft Earth shares similarities with the classic Minecraft game, focusing on building, resource gathering, crafting, and exploration. It operates on the same Bedrock engine used in other Minecraft editions. The game features a build mode where players collaboratively create augmented reality structures on Buildplates. These can then be explored in life-size through play mode. In both modes, Buildplates are superimposed onto the real world using augmented reality technology, employing the phone's camera for an immersive experience.
Resource collection in Minecraft Earth is interactive, involving tappables on the game map and engaging in adventures - which can be puzzles, specific tasks, or encounters with hostile entities. The game intelligently accounts for physical real-world elements like trees and lakes to minimize disruptions in the AR experience.
In Minecraft Earth, players encounter various unique mobs - entities with special variations distinct from those in the standard Minecraft. The game introduces two types of in-game currencies: rubies and minecoins. Players can earn rubies through gameplay or purchase them. These are used for acquiring gameplay items like build plates. Minecoins, consistent across all Bedrock versions of Minecraft, are obtainable only through purchase. They are used for aesthetic enhancements, including texture packs and character skins.
Go on an adventure
Before you get started on giving life to new creations, Minecraft Earth will have you digging around for materials to use first. Players will have to explore and look for resources that can be used in building objects. Completing challenges is also part of the adventure as you search around your neighborhood for loot and rewards through the lens of your phone camera.
You will see holograms of blocky patches of land and other game elements that stay true to Minecraft’s trademark pixelated design. Also, similar to Pokemon Go, Minecraft Earth’s challenges and stops have taken root in different areas so Minecrafters can visit them, just as how Pokemon trainers can go to Pokestops and Pokemon Gyms often. The game does not create a challenge on the spot depending on a player’s level and achievement. Rather, finding the location of the challenges is part of the adventure.
The more, the merrier
Minecraft Earth advocates more for team play rather than competitive gaming. There will be no player-vs-player mode, but instead, players are encouraged to band together to form a new group and to go on an adventure as a team. There is no limit to how many people can join an adventure. When interacting with other Minecraft players, they will appear as the Minecraft version of themselves with a Gamer Tag attached to their character. Usually, the more people you have in your group, the easier it will be to complete challenges, especially those that require combat. When the team wins, all its members get the same reward or prize.
Everything is connected
Playing Minecraft Earth is like entering another world together with all the other players of the game. There are no servers or separate team batches. When you launch Minecraft Earth, you are transported to the same reality and will walk the same soil as everyone else. That also means that whatever you create and share while playing the game can also be seen by others afterward. If you create a mini playground in the middle of the street, other Minecraft players who happen to pass by that very same street will see your creation and can even interact with them.
Is Minecraft Earth free to play?
Yes, Minecraft Earth is free to download and play for everyone. However, there are in-app purchases available for things like cosmetic items and additional resources.
What Android devices are compatible with Minecraft Earth?
